Art of Decompression

I want to take you guys on a journey back to high school. Do you recall how long time elapsed in that final hour of your last class of the day? That hour seemed to last longer than the school day itself. Now 34 and two children later,my life seems to be a blur of passing moments. All of which seem too elusive to hold on to. I often wonder who has the remote to my life..Why are they fast forwarding through all of the good parts? What can we do to slow things down? How can we be present?

The state of being present requires skill development. I utilize methods that attain a level of decompression. Decompression as defined by definitions.net is, "A return to a normal, more relaxed state after a period of intense stress, psychological pressure, or urgent activity; -- of people. I only disagree with this definition in one aspect. The intensity of the stress is not the predictor of your need to decompress. Stress is a part of life. You have to embrace it to grow. However, it does have to be managed so it does not overwhelm you. Mental health is an often overlooked aspect of the healthy/active lifestyle. I firmly believe it is the most important. With that being said I think it's vital that you schedule planned decompression events into your day. It only makes sense to balance the quantity of stress inducing events which include nearly everything.

Some examples of decompression events that I follow are:

Reading

Family Movie/Game Nights

Going for a walk

Gaming

Drawing

Cooking

Doing absolutely nothing with my family

Isolating myself

Listening to music

Meditation/Visualizations

I would argue that working out could be on the list but the actual intent of exercise is to place the body in a stressed environment to force an adaptation... Are you taking time to decompress? What are some of the things that you do that I may not have on my list? I would be very curious to see some responses. Happy Memorial Day Weekend fitfam!
