Salt, Sugar & Fat

Money is power and power can be poisonous. The dynamics of the levels of deceit uncovered in this 350 page read are uncanny. Most of us have theorized that the food industry was culpable for most of the health concerns of our society. Nothing will prepare you for the impact money, greed and competition have on the welfare of the consumer.

Salt, sugar and fat are key ingredients in most well prepared meals. That's a fairly well known fact. What isn't obvious to us, the consumer, is the amounts force fed to us. You would argue that we have freedom of choice in regards to what we ingest. I share that same sentiment, however, teams of scientists, food industry giants and our own government have skillfully adapted ways of manipulating ingredient lists to change the perception of how food impacts our health. It is nearly impossible to know what effects our food will have on our overall health. Too much salt causes hypertension. Too much sugar causes diabetes. Too much fat greatly increases risk of heart complications. Yet, your average family snack will contain up to 10 times the amount of your daily requirements for each. Our obesity rate continues to climb. Hospitalizations and deaths due to the aforementioned health disorders are also on the rise. The CEO's of old and new are all aware of the consequences, however, are on record using "shareholder concerns" as justification.

What can we do? We have to be diligent about researching our food. We have to make an effort to share said research with family, friends and our community. Use fresh ingredients to make snacks and meals. Take time out of your week to focus on preparing meals in advance to avoid the need for fast foods. Take ownership of your health and nutrition today. "Together there is no height we can not reach!"
